Health tips

Though some days (and nights) may go very slowly, your baby is developing quickly between 4-24 weeks. Find out what changes to expect.

Facetime

Babies prefer human faces to any other patterns or colours. Your baby especially loves your face.

At around two months, your baby really starts to focus on nearby faces. Their vision is still developing, so make use of close-up times like feeds or nappy changes to make eye contact and smile.

First smiles

Your baby’s first real smile usually comes at 6-8 weeks and instantly makes up for all the sleepless nights and revolting nappies. It’s often a response to seeing someone special – like you! Smile back.

Listening

Listening builds your baby’s language skills. Babble along with them and talk about practically anything! Your baby may respond by moving their body, making eye contact or repeating some sounds.

Finding their voice

At this age, crying is still your baby’s main method of communication, but it’s thankfully not the only sound they make. From about two months, you’ll hear some coos and gurgles, turning into babbles by four months. By six months, your baby may string sounds together, making those cute ‘ba-ba-ba-ba’ noises that you can’t help imitating.

Movements

From three months, your baby may hold small things in their hands, while by five months, they can reach for toys. By 4-5 months, they’ll be rolling over, and by six months, they may push up on their arms when on their tummy.

Rest assured that it’s quite common for a baby to be ‘behind’ on some milestones and ‘ahead’ on others. Enjoy your baby at each special stage.
